Dr. Carrie Harmon has worked in diagnostics for over 20 years and currently leads a research, teaching, and extension program that focuses on disease diagnosis, assay development, and diagnostic training. Her program, the UF-IFAS Plant Diagnostic Center, houses a diagnostic lab that serves as the surge and expert-level resource for her region, and is APHIS-approved to run clearance samples for high-impact plant pathogens. Her laboratory processes over 3,000 samples per year and serves a wide variety of clientele from around the world. Dr. Harmon directs one of five regional center laboratories of the National Plant Diagnostic Network (NPDN, www.npdn.org), is a founding co-PI of the Diagnostic Assay Validation Network, and is the PI and Co-Director of the SE US regional project for NPDN. She is currently the Deputy Executive Director of the NPDN. Dr. Harmon teaches online courses in plant disease diagnosis and applied disease management, provides hands-on diagnostic training to traditional students and professionals, and conducts research to improve plant disease detection and diagnosis. Additionally, her research has included assay validation, comparative analyses, and development of ring testing procedures for the improvement of disease detection and diagnostics.
