Description

High plains virus(HPV) has rapidly emerged as a major trade issue for sweet and field corn seed exported to Chile and New Zealand. Because HPV was detected in seed production areas in Chile in 2022, the Chilean government issued an emergency regulation in December requiring seed shipments to be certified free from HPV as well as wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV).  Chile’s new regulatory requirements will likely cause major disruptions in seed exports unless feasible phytosanitary measures can be developed before the next shipping season. The purpose of this workshop is to identify and prioritize the issues and needs and develop a strategy for moving forward in 2023. Other topics of regulatory concern to the vegetable and flower seed sectors will also be discussed.
