Speaker Bio
Joshua Oyekanmi is a first-year Ph.D. student in Plant Pathology and Ecosystem Genomics in the School of Plant Sciences, University of Arizona. Drawing from his M.Sc. degrees in Plant Pathology from the University of Arizona and the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria, Josh’s current research focuses on leveraging plant microbiomes to enhance crop resilience, nutrition, and productivity. His expertise includes seed and plant health, biocontrol development against aflatoxin contamination, and innovative technologies for managing plant viral diseases. He is currently expanding his skills in multi-omics and molecular tools to develop biostimulants and bioprotectants for a leafy vegetable, Lactuca sativa.
In the future, Josh seeks to apply his multidisciplinary skills to impactful research in the industry or government. His career goal is to drive innovations in plant health, crop improvement and phytosanitary regulations through interdisciplinary approaches. His aims include protecting plant germplasm from pathogens and pests, building seed resilience against abiotic stressors, and improving crop production strategies through microbiome applications. Passionate about sustainable agriculture and food security, he has published eight research papers and has received multiple awards, including the Best Research Poster at the 2024 School of Plant Sciences Retreat, the University of Arizona.
Joshua mentors students, collaborates internationally on plant pathology research, and leads educational outreach initiatives. Attending ASTA’s Leadership Summit marks a significant milestone in Joshua's career, offering him the opportunity to gain insights from seed industry leaders, build relationships with stakeholders across seed health, trade, and regulatory sectors, and engage policymakers to advance regulatory processes that foster innovation and compliance.
