Description

There are 2 main innovations to our climate risk platform: The Strategic Climate Planning tool (10+ years out) and the Grower Facing Tool (1 day - 1 year out).

Strategic Climate Planning tool (10+ years out)
This tool helps our seed customers understand--for a specific crop/variety and location--how crop suitability and key risks (heat stress, frost risk, pest/disease) will evolve over the coming years and how to optimize breeding, R&D, sales and marketing, and production efforts accordingly. We have been able to reduce uncertainty on these long term forecasts by on average 85% relative to the best available alternative models. This suite of tools is being used by various groups across the seed industry and world, ranging from Hazera (limagrain subsidiary) and Advanta (UPL subsidiary) to the big 4. Breakout of the specific innovations:
1.    Highly specific long term risk analyses: Our risk analysis is crop/variety, location, and crop-stage specific e.g. the risk of multiple hours with temperatures over 35 degrees C during pollination will increase 5x over the next 10 years. This helps inform breeding targets and siting decisions.
2.    Risks are translated into business impacts: What do these climate risks mean for yield/quality (germination) and thus profitability? Quantify both the the climate risk and climate opportunity in terms of $$$; This informs better production/R&D siting, more targeted breeding for resilient varieties, etc.
3.    WHEN will the climate for a specific location become unsuitable: i.e. how long do we have before these risks really start hurting our business (this is quite often in the current decade for many locations)
4.    Climate analogs: help companies answer the question: "what locations around the world today, look like my production locations will look 10-20 years from now" or "in 10-20 years, what locations will look like my top production sites today." This informs climate-smart breeding, trial siting, production siting, etc.

Grower Facing Tool
We have also launched SKIP, a grower facing tool with Advanta Seeds-- field specific forecasts, tuned to variety specific risks, 1 day - 1 year out. Growers can tune their forecast to the specific risks/extremes that they care most about. This tool enabled their growers to make climate-informed decisions pre/in season (planting date, input timing, harvest timing, etc.).

Why it Matters to the Seed Industry: Long Term tools (10+ years)
●    Understand climate risk in terms of $$$: Justify investment in adaptation measures; increase ROI for capital investments; Easily understand and report risks to investors/stakeholders and others in value chain
●    Identify and perform diligence on new growth areas: Improve stability and reliability of supply/production (assure availability of seed); Lower the cost of production while maintaining quality; Reduce time to open new markets and get ahead of typical 5-10 year lead time (talent, legal, training, learning best sowing windows, etc.)
●    Secure + expand marketshare through superior, climate-smart varieties: Breed for the specific risks your crop/variety will be exposed to in 5-20 years and justify the investment with data
●    Identify optimal locations for R&D: sites with the most similar climate to target markets-- past, present, future; global or region specific; Reduce time to market; Improve performance stability of products across environments; accelerate market adoption / increase market share

Grower facing tools (1 day - 1 year)
●    Differentiate from the competition; build customer loyalty: Pacific seeds has set itself apart from other seed companies in the region by offering a best in class weather + climate risk tool to its growers. SKIP enables these growers to make the smartest decisions possible around the weather + climate 24/7, 1 day - 1 year out.
