Julie DeYoung serves as a senior consultant to The Center for Food Integrity, applying her 35 years of food and agricultural public relations experience to help empower those in the food system to meaningfully engage with their most important audiences on issues that matter. Julie supports the Coalition for Responsible Gene Editing in Agriculture, working with a diverse group of stakeholders to develop a framework for responsible use of gene editing, as well as other CFI programs.

The Coalition for Responsible Gene Editing in Agriculture strives for global understanding and acceptance of gene editing technology in agriculture and food. Coalition participants have a shared goal to earn trust in gene editing to help provide consumers with safe, nutritious and affordable food produced in sustainable systems. The current workstreams of the Coalition are centered around creating a system-wide responsible use framework; developing communication best practices, toolkit and training; and implementing a stakeholder outreach campaign.

Julie’s background includes corporate, trade association and public relations agency positions. Julie served as vice president of Corporate Communications for Perdue Farms Incorporated, the fourth-largest poultry company in the U.S., for four years before moving to a consulting role in 2009, providing strategic counsel and serving as primary media contact and company spokesperson until 2016. Previously, Julie worked for ConAgra Foods, Inc., the National Turkey Federation, public relations agencies Rhea & Kaiser Marketing Communications, FleishmanHillard and Bader Rutter & Associates; and a publishing firm, Johnson Hill Press, where she began her career in 1983.

Julie grew up on a diversified crop and livestock farm in southern Iowa and is a graduate of Iowa State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture journalism with an emphases in animal science and public relations.
